Before the Water Rose
Celilo Falls, 1956
Photographs by Richard Stefani (1933–2022)
In the fall of 1956, twenty-three-year-old Richard Stefani traveled to Celilo Falls with two cameras and two rolls of color film.
Months later, the falls were submerged by the waters behind The Dalles Dam.
Nearly seventy years later, Before the Water Rose brings this remarkable body of photographs into public view in its entirety for the first time.
